So I'm not and never was a really big guy, buy at one point in my life (around the age of 29 during my residency) I was actually technically overweight. I was 10 pounds over a healthy weight, and 22 over my ideal weight. A combination of eating and sleeping poorly, not working out, and some other factors led to my problem.
A common misconception some people have is that they fool themselves into not working out saying "I'm too tired to work out". Studies have shown that the rest that a healthy person gets is so much better than an unhealthy person that is far outweighs any time during the day spent working out.
Anyway I dropped 20 of the 22 pounds and hover around there right now. I like to keep in shape for myself, my family, and hopefully as an inspiration to my patients showing them that it is possible even for busy people to stay in shape.

Diabetes
Another common concern for people who are overweight is diabetes. Diabetes affects millions of people and kills tens of thousands every year. Some people are born with this disease and can't help having it. Some people develop diabetes due to poor diet and inactivity.
These people may have gotten diabetes in different ways, but they have one strong similarity. With the right regiment of diet and exercise their disease can be controlled with little or no insulin injections. When people are diagnosed with diabetes it often has the effect of stopping them from working out and feeling like victims.
Whether you have recently contracted diabetes, or if you are already in poor health you can do something about it by working out regularly and adhering to a strict diet.
Best of luck.

Heart Disease
Heart disease is a very common problem for people for are overweight, and especially for people who are obese. It is also a problem that is very near and dear to me, as my father died several years ago from a heart attack (even though he was in relatively good shape).
Some things you can do to help yourself get in shape are:
-Running
-Walking
-Biking
-Swimming
... Basically anything that will help you break a sweat is good for the heart. It's a muscle and if not used it won't work. Look at people in wheelchairs. In many cases if nervous activity was restored to their legs the legs would still not function because the muscle hasn't been used in such a long time.
This is why we need to exercise our hearts (even if you are skinny). Heart disease can strike anyone but it is certainly more prevalent in people who are overweight (75% more likley).

Cancer or a Fatty Buildup
I had an overweight 22 year old kid come into my office the other day scared to death he had cancer because his girlfriend found a small lump in his belly. I knew as soon as I felt it that it wasn't cancer but rather a fatty buildup. This is just one of the scary but non-life threatening things that can happen when you are overweight. I told him that if he lost some weight it would go away and not be a problem again.
NOTE: If you feel a bump get it checked out. It's not worth the risk to not do so.

Meet Me
Hi,
I'm "DaMan" a doctor in a city just like yours. I see patient after patient come in to my office and it kills me when I have to tell them that their health concerns are of a large part the fault of their own. I plan on using this blog to talk about how people can lose weight, I'll talk about some mainstream ideas and some less popular ones. There is so much noise to cut through when you're thinking about losing weight and I'll do my best to help you with that.
